Toris adventures while studying abroad! |
HOLA! it has now been a week since I have arrived in Spain and boy, what a week it has been! I’d like to say that its been nothing but adventure.. well it has been an adventure but with some high’s and low’s. There is definetly more to be thankful for, then not but its definetly been an adjustment. a word to describe this week would be; overwhelming. not in all negative senses of the word though. lets start with the positive, which is actually starting in chronological order!
First of all, I LOVE my host family and my adorable roomate and I have really been blessed with this living situation. My senora and her hubbie are so cute, they are little ol’ granparents with 5 kids and 5 grandkids (who are always over and they are so adorable). And they are so accomidating and sweet, even though they don’t know a word of english. That is where it gets frustrating because it is hard to get the basic needs across at times. But I am learning, and so are they. patience really is a virture in this situation. It is just so nice to be in a family enviroment, we all eat together and sit in the living room together and its so great to hang out with the grandbabies (pictures to come soon). I have to share this one story because it was such a fun night! So senora and hubbie were going out to watch a futbol game after dinner, and christina and I were still eating dinner and so they left. A few minutes later down (from their house upstairs) come Pablo and Ismael.. and then after taking TONS of macbook photos and teaching them how to play Go Fish, we realized that we were babysitting haha… and then we both laughed because that would happen to us. but did we mind at all? of course not, two future teachers love spending time with babies, especially since we were in spain and we were all singing lady gaga and ava maria. it was so much fun, and senora and hubbie were able to have a night out on the town (not that every time isnt a night on the town, I mean this is spain)
but yes, needless to say I am never complaining when the grandbabies come over because they are so stinkin’ cute, and so sweet! it is nice because they all range from infant to 9 years old, so our spanish vocabularies are similar, which I appreciate.
Another great thing about Spain this first week was that it is muy bonita (very beautiful) When walking around I am constantly saying “oh em gee, im in SPAIN” it still has not even sunk in that this is my new home for the next four or so weeks, but its so beautiful and different then anything I have ever seen.. so lucky I am (that sort of sounded like that guy from star wars said that, huh?)
and now.. for the end of the week highlights.. let me just say, it wasnt pretty! I fell in love with the food instatnly, but it did not fall in love with me. I have always thought I had what some might call, a “steal stomach” but alas, i was proven wrong. I was having some bad jet lag, and having a hard time adjusting to the time change and the eating difference and I was either really hungry or really tired and towards the end of the week I came across a lovely “bug” called the stomach flu. It is really common with students that study abroad here and it is a combination of stress and a virus that I could have gotten from pretty much anything.. it definelty put a daper on the past four days here in spain and made it really hard to not be homesick. becuase when you are tosisng your cookies, and your senora thinks you are having an appendicitis, you just really want your mom there to makes things better. but my senora, being the gem she is, came to the resuce! She had tea and gaterade ready within seconds and when I just couldnt take it anymore, she called the doctors and I was in within the hour… now for everyone that knows me, the doctors and I are not friends. but desperate times call for desperate measures, and so I cried like a 19 year old baby and got a shot so that I would no longer toss my cookies! The doc gave me some meds, and I have been gradually been feeling better, thank you baby Jesus for that! I’m still on a strick diet of bland foods, and I’m nervous to eat any foods besides bread and yogurt but I feel like things can only go up from here!
so that is my updates for now.. I am enjoying mi familia, the great people in my group and Granada in general, but the stomach flu can suck it! I’ll post pictures and more positive updates soon.
besos, adios!
p.s all of the internet browsers are in spanish, so when I went to spell check this post, it was spell checking in spanish, so sorry for all the grammatical errors!
